Keep the Colors separate! Colors stand out on their own! When you mix too many colors too close together they don't pop out, they tend to blend into one non-attractive color. The old "right rule" to go by is usually to use two to five colors max per plate(not including the plate color) But remember to keep them separate so you can see them, and keep in mind that if more than one are eating you will be seeing the colors of their plate as well. Try to use the whole table as your artistic canvas.
Here is an example of a simple plate with just two dominating colors, (not including the plate color) keep in mind that you have the variation of the color in shades as well.
Here is an exception to the case of a plate with just one dominating color, see how nice that can look, there are exceptions like in this example, we have only one main color but the shade of color are still kept separate, in this design you don't need a second color. MMMM, make you just want to dive right in.
Here is an example of a few plates with just three colors each. See how the three colors are kept separate striking the eye with color contrast, its as if the colors become alive.
